THE COLLECTOR: MY FIRST POSTER

In the fall of 1998, I was an awkward teen going into my freshman year in college.  I rented this movie called Great Expectations; we had studied it in English, so I was expecting it to follow the classic tale.  Boy, was I surprised and mesmerized by Ms. Paltrow and her manipulation of Finn.  I could, so, easily relate to Finn.  Growing up near the coast, living in an old converted army barracks (nothing you would want to bring a girl home to).  He and I both were having the tease of love, it being within your reach but never being able to grasp it.  The adolescent confusion of “is this real”, “are we really together”, or “am I delusional” was filling my head.  The mystery, whether or not I was assuming too much about a relationship.  So the movie became a poster child (pardon the pun) for the way I wanted to conduct my affairs.  Nothing really is, until it is….

At the time, eBay was starting to roar, and I came across a double sided advance US 1 Sheet of the movie.  I collected Gwyneth only for a while, Shakespeare in Love, Bounce (sheepish), etc...  I even had a Great Expectation album poster hanging up in my room while attending college.  Gwen was sexy, but there was a deeper meaning.  She was my image for the type of women I never wanted to come across or begin a relationship with; a vixen, tease, false truth, and desire wrapped in pain.  Luckily, I never came across that woman and met my “one and only” while in grad school.  So Gwen stayed on my wall until I got married.
